How Students Learn at Wasatch
Learning at Wasatch
At Wasatch, our goal is for every student to feel known, supported, and challenged. Joy and rigorous learning belong together. We want children to ask questions, explain their ideas, create meaningful work, and feel proud of their growth.
Think, talk, and write
Students need opportunities to make sense of ideas for themselves, discuss their thinking with others, and communicate through writing. Our instructional focus is on helping every student participate, explain their reasoning, and learn from classmates.
Try, share, and strengthen an idea
- Think alone: Try a strategy, draw a model, or write an initial idea. Use available learning supports when needed.
- Think with a partner: Explain your approach, listen carefully, ask questions, and use feedback to improve.
- Think as a class: Compare strategies, make connections, and revise or extend your thinking.
Know the learning goal
Clear learning goals help students understand what they are working toward. Examples, success criteria, visual supports, and sentence frames help students explain their thinking and recognize their next step.
Grow as readers, writers, and mathematicians
Our focus includes strong reading foundations, understanding what we read, writing across subjects, and explaining mathematical ideas. Teachers use student discussion, writing, and work to understand progress and plan what comes next.
Support and challenge
Students learn at different rates and bring different strengths. Teachers collaborate to review learning, respond to questions and misconceptions, and plan additional support or challenge. Explore our student programs and supports.
Create and belong
Art, music, dance, drama, and other school experiences give students opportunities to express ideas, collaborate, and share their talents. Learn about fine arts and student programs.
Continue the conversation at home
Ask: “What did you try?” “How do you know?” or “How did your thinking change?” Read together, invite your child to explain a strategy, and celebrate effort, thoughtful revisions, and growth.
