Peter Haslam

About Me

My name is Peter Haslam and I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah in a family of five. I am an avid outdoorsman and I enjoy activities such as backpacking, biking, skateboarding, and hiking. I also am an enthusiastic sports fan, having played most competitive sports growing up, especially basketball, lacrosse and tennis. Beyond physical activities, I enjoy listening to music and attending live concerts.

I graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2003 with a BA in Chemistry and returned the following year to obtain a Master of Arts in Teaching. You may find it odd that a chemistry graduate would want to teach elementary or middle school students, but as long as I can remember I have always wanted to teach younger children. I enjoy working with children because it gives me the opportunity to feel young in my heart and see smiles and laughter everyday. I continually challenge myself and strive for excellence, which keeps life fun and exciting, as well as humbling at the same time. In my classroom, I encourage students to meet high expectations and push themselves to:

  1. Take risks and challenge themselves.
  2. Be prepared and willing to participate.
  3. Respect themselves, others and the school community.
  4. Always try their best and have pride in their work.
  5. HAVE FUN!

As a teacher, I believe that I am learning as much from the students as they are learning from me. I will consistently push myself to meet the same expectations that I have for students and continue to grow each year. I know that each child has a unique and distinctive life outside of school. I will work to bring that life into the classroom as well as help foster the school in the surrounding community. My goal is to bring a positive and open-minded attitude that to the classroom in which all students are given the same opportunities to learn and grow. I want to provide a fun and safe environment the will not restrict students’ hopes and dreams so that each student can give themselves the best opportunities that life has to offer. I think that it is very important for parents to have an active role in their child’s education. I will consistently communicate with parents and work to strengthen their bond with the school’s community. Children need education for success in their lives. It is our job as teachers to give them the necessary tools to make good decisions and to be contributing members of society.
